Do Not Overuse Fertilizer!

Residents are urged to use only that much fertilizer on their lawn as is necessary to feed the grass. Excess fertilizer is carried off the lawn during rain fall and discharged into Long Island Sound. This causes excess nutrient loading in the Sound. These nutrients encourage algae blooms which consume the oxygen and kill fish and other marine animals. Careful lawn maintenance can avoid this problem and improve the bio-diversity of the Sound.
