Seasonal Fire Safety Tips

Fall & Winter

• Create and maintain a fire escape plan with your family.
• Never park your vehicle over a pile of leaves. The heat from the exhaust system could ignite the leaves below resulting in a fire that can destroy your vehicle
• Have your fireplace cleaned as usage of your fireplace builds up creosote which can block your chimney flow and as well ignite under temperature which can cause a chimney fire.
• Do not place hot ash from your fireplace outside on your porch or deck. Place in a metal container and keep a safe distance from the home.
• Have your heating appliances serviced. A lack of maintenance can result in failure of equipment
• Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Change the batteries when you change your clocks back
• Always keep a fire extinguisher readily available in your home.

Spring & Summer

• Go over and practice your fire escape plan
• Once again, check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and change the batteries when you change your clocks.
• Clear all left over fall leaves from your pool heaters and central ac units.
• Do not use extension cords for window unit air conditioners that are not rated for such use.
• Clean out your barbecue and check all hoses, fittings and propane tanks.
• Do not place barbecues close to structures. Keep a safe distance away.
• Have all your gas powered lawn equipment serviced. When finished using your lawn mower or weed trimmer let them cool off before putting them away.
