Other Stormwater Management Issues for Residents

Storm Drains
Residents should never pour waste oil or other contaminants into the storm drains. These drains lead directly into Long Island Sound. The storm drains are intended for rainwater only. Any other material or chemical will contribute to pollution in the Sound.

Do Not Overuse Fertilizer
Residents are urged to use only that much fertilizer on their lawn as is necessary to feed the grass. Excess fertilizer is carried off the lawn during rainfall and discharged into Long Island Sound. This causes excess nutrient loading in the Sound. These nutrients encourage algae blooms that consume the oxygen and kill fish and other marine animals. Careful lawn maintenance can avoid this problem and improve the bio-diversity of the Sound.

Sump Pumps
Basement sump pumps should never be discharged into the sanitary sewer system. This clean water must be managed separately from sanitary sewerage. Depending on the amount of discharge, drywells may need to be installed to dispose of this water. If you are considering installing a sump pump call Village Hall and make an appointment to review you water management plan.
